Biography
Angela Gilda Carota is currently a postdoctoral fellow affiliated with CNR-IEIIT and the CATS group, working on the development of a wearable oral sensing platform for real-time diagnostics. She joined Prof. Fabio Di Francesco’s group during her PhD, funded by a grant in memory of Giulio Regeni, which focused on the development of a portable electrochemical platform integrated with CRISPR-Cas technology for pathogen detection. During her PhD, she spent one year as a visiting student at the Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors group of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), under the supervision of Prof. Arben Merkoçi. During her Bachelor’s and Master’s studies, in collaboration with the ALS Group at CNR-ICCOM, Angela focused on characterizing and identifying unknown analytes in cultural heritage and clinical diagnostics, using Raman spectroscopy and SERS combined with multivariate analysis techniques.

Education
• PhD Chemistry and Material Science, 2025;
• M.Sc., Analytical Chemistry, University of Pisa 2021;
• B.Sc., Chemistry, University of Pisa 2019.

Research interests
Angela’s research focuses on the development of portable and wearable sensors for point-of-care applications. Her work combines nanotechnologies, electrochemical and optical transduction, and innovative biorecognition elements such as CRISPR-Cas systems, with a particular interest in DNA nanotechnologies. She is also interested in low-cost fabrication techniques for devices integrated with transmission systems based on wireless communication protocols.
